Visualizing Irish general election results

Updated: Apr 4, 2020

Hi,

So the Irish general election is next Saturday(9th Feb 2020) and my favorite aspect is the counting of votes. Ireland uses proportional representation, so when you vote, you select your candidate in order of preference. I.e my first vote goes to X, my second to Y and third to Z. You can vote for every candidate on the ballot if you want, so long as you express a preference. This makes counting a lot of fun, as you have the process of candidate elimination and recounting of their 2nd/3rd/4th etc preferences. Eventually, you end up with your winning candidates, as each constituency has 3 or 4 representatives elected.

In anticipate of next weekend, I took a look at 2016 results and put together a PowerBI model to show results, and especially try to show whose transfers went where. It is the first draft and I will update with 2020 results.

What do you think?

Mark
